In an era where digital technology is continually pushing the boundaries of our daily lives, a new phenomenon is steadily gaining traction: AI companions, especially in the form of copilots. This shift, however, is more than just the latest tech trend; it's an evolution in human-computer interaction that promises to redefine the way we perceive and interact with artificial intelligence.

For decades, humans have been fantasizing about the idea of having an intelligent companion. Movies, television shows, and novels have portrayed AI characters like HAL 9000 from '2001: A Space Odyssey' or Samantha in 'Her,' both epitomizing the concept of a machine that can communicate, empathize, and evolve just like a human. Today, these fantasies are becoming a reality with the advancements in machine learning and natural language processing.

The concept of AI companionship stretches beyond mere conversation bots. It encompasses the idea of creating a digital entity that communicates with us, understands, empathizes, and evolves with us. The 2000s saw the rise of commercial chatbots with SmarterChild on AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger. These chatbots could perform a variety of tasks, like looking up movie times, checking the weather, and even playing games.

These AI companions are designed to emulate human-like qualities, fostering a sense of connection, empathy, and companionship with users which forces us as designers to carefully examine how this is changing the experience for our users. What was once a dry analytics tool, for example, suddenly takes on a 'personality' with the introduction of a conversational chatbot, and with it, opens up an entirely new landscape of experience that needs to be explored.

Why are we (and our users) drawn to anthropomorphize computers? One reason is our innate tendency to attribute human characteristics and emotions to non-human entities. It reflects our deep-rooted desire for connection and the need to relate to our surroundings. When computers are anthropomorphized, they become more relatable and engaging, enabling users to form emotional connections and establish meaningful relationships.

AI companions, in particular, are rapidly becoming a popular manifestation of anthropomorphizing computers. By combining human creativity with AI's capabilities, we can unlock new levels of innovation and design solutions that better cater to user needs.

For example, tools like 'Runway ML' uses machine learning algorithms to assist designers in tasks like image generation, style transfer, or object detection. Such tools can significantly enhance efficiency, allowing designers to focus more on their work's conceptual and creative aspects.
